What closed captioning said: "...Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova, Medgar Evers..."

WTF?

What a shame that this is the only recognition that Medgar Evers is getting today. More of a shame is that those who read that name probably had no idea who he was or what he did.
Medgar Evers was definately NOT "among others" he was head and shoulders above others!

A lot of times, the people typing it don't have a script, and they're just trying to type what they hear. That's likely what happened.

Well, obviously, that's what happened. But there's such a thing as CONTEXT CLUES. No announcer would be talking about Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, and Medgar Evers in the same sentence.
